We all know that right now money is tight. That may not be the case for everyone, but for many people that is the way it is at this time. Even if money wasn’t tight, who wants to spend money on something they won’t be satisfied with? Not me, that’s for sure. That is why some people turn to dvd rental rating and reviews. They want to get an idea of what other people thought of a certain movie before they rent it.
On the surface dvd rental rating and reviews may seem like a good idea. After all, you can find out what others thought of it. And, in most cases, you can see at a glance since many times these ratings come in the form of stars. Usually it’s done with 1 to 5 stars with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent (sometimes they only use four stars for the top position, either way, you get the idea).
But, is this really the best way to pick your movies? I find that I very often disagree with ratings for a certain movie. For example, a few years ago there was a very popular movie out about the exploits of some guys on a bachelor party weekend in Las Vegas. Everywhere I turned people were saying how “hysterically funny” it was.
Maybe it was because of all the hype, but I have to say that when I did see it, I was terribly disappointed. I find that happens pretty often when I rely on someone else’s opinion of what is good and what isn’t.
In one way I do find the ratings to be helpful though, and that is in determining if the content of the movie is something I want to see. What I mean by that is that I hate a lot of gore in a movie. As odd as it may sound I don’t mind violence but I can do without all the detail, thank you very much.
So, I appreciate the reviews that give me an idea of how much gore I can expect. Obviously, with some types of movies you know it may have gore in it, such as a western, a war movie or even some sci-fi, but not all movies in that genre really focus on the gore. To me, to be able to find out in advance if a movie will focus on that aspect or kind or rush right by it, is important.
And that is what I like to read reviews for. Other than that I don’t really care a lot about a review unless they are from someone who I know has similar tastes in movies as I do.
So, when it comes to dvd rental rating and reviews, I think you should trust only one person… yourself. You don’t want to miss out on a great movie just because some snooty critic didn’t like it, do you? Just use the reviews as a barometer of what content is in the movie and from that point of view whether or not it is the type of movie you want to see.
