Todays audience for tv shows of today is not all that clear cut as there are a wide variety of different demographics that make up the entire audience for television. So figuring out what people are actually interested in and are actively watching can be a bit of a challenge.
Some of the core demographics for television would obviously be young men and women, and elderly men and women. These four demographics make up the core of television watching audiences. While there are of course more specific demographics, these four make up the foundation and can tell you a lot about what the general population is interested in.
Young males are considered one of the most difficult demographics to even reach as most young adult males find themselves busy with work, school, or friends and generally do not spend as much time in front of the TV as their female counterparts. However they also tend to be the most profitable since when they do watch tv, it can be on a fairly consistent schedule.
Also, most young men do not have children in the house as opposed to young women. This can play a huge part in what exactly they watch and when they watch it. For the most part, late night tv is when the male crowd sit down to enjoy some tv, typically enjoying comedies and other light hearted shows whereas women tend to enjoy more serious shows and dramas.
Todays audience for tv shows of today is also becoming harder and harder to deal with because of the internet. The internet’s popularity and ease of use means more and more young people are watching their shows on their PCs rather than their TVs. This has a huge impact on their demographics since it means overall less people are watching.
Young people of today spend more time in front of their computers then they do in front of their TVs. When it comes to tv shows, it is for one primary reason. It is simply easier to watch TV on the computer then an actual television. With television, you are restricted to specific channels and schedules. But with a computer you can watch any show, any episode, any time.
This ever increasing shift away from conventional television makes it highly problematic, but also potentially highly profitable. As I am sure many of you have realizes, websites like Youtube display plenty of ads and even commercials at the start of their videos. This generates a lot of revenue, same way commercials on normal television do.
So when thinking about Todays audience for tv shows of today, you need to understand that while most of them still do watch plenty of tv, there is a shift towards watching on the computer. This shift makes it pretty difficult to figure out what people are actually watching, since there are so many places to watch shows and no real way to know who is watching.
This means that as time rolls on, figuring out specific demographics will become more and more difficult until eventually they become virtually impossible.
